Life Drawing Merritt Semester Wrap Up

Looking at the first three drawings may give you a good idea about my patience for long poses. It may be more evident that I prefer the dance than the detail.

Figure painting

Friday was the first day with the model in my painting class at Berkeley City College. It is significant to say that I was prepared. I got to class on time with all my supplies, research and ready to ... not paint, but find my way around a new environment. I may not be unique in this but how many people fight the fight mode by sitting with their head below their knees to get the blood back to their head?

I did that, and my breathing, walking to the hallway and deciding that the discomfort of the physical environment, and panic, wasn't going to win the day. Fortunatly, I know my materials, have a level of competence, and got to work.

The model likes, and photographs, my work for her portfolio.

An model in my drawing class also took photos of my work. At Linden St Studio one of the artists took a pic of my work. When I told Joel about this, he made a great suggestion, take a picture of the photographer taking a picture of my work. So I did...

Teachers Palette

Classroom demos, assignments, research, writing. Painting. Curiosity along the journey.

It does help when I see how it's done. And I still run into the mechanics of reproducing a pattern, in this case laying out the palette. Louise even painted a demo, so I got to see how she messed with the colors. So different than Pablo's method. Valuable to see that difference.

Chart my colors, list and mix, have some relationship to memorizing names, meanings, relationships. Palpitations just writing about what I was working on this afternoon. Very distressing when the simple is confounding, damning. List of colors to include on a palette, and the order in which to place them. The learning curve crashes on me sometimes.

Painting is much simpler. I don't mind painting outside the lines. Overlapping shapes. Layering colors.

The host plays music that, for the most part, I've never heard, and get a charge from. Model session, 3 hours: every 20 minutes a 5min break. Refreshments, including homemade craft beers, coffee, food, desserts and low keyed socializing are in the kitchen. The call to back to work... ART! ART! ART! ('artwork is work'_sticker on fridge) Occasional compliments, questions, and no critique.
